La Brea Tar Pits

Since I was at The American Girl Place while the boys when to The La Brea Tar Pits I asked my 13 year old to write something up about this part of our vacation.  Here is his contribution:

La Brea Tar Pits

The La Brea Tar Pits are the only area ever to have a major archaeological dig located inside a city. (Los Angeles) Millions of bones are pulled from the pit every year.

A few of the fossils of animals found there are

Saber-toothed Cats,
Short faced bears,
Ancient Camels,
Ancient Horses,
Prehistoric Bison,
Giant Sloths,
Many ancient vultures and other birds of prey have also been found.
Many insects and fossilized plants have also been found.

However, out of literally millions and millions of bones, only 1 human skeleton has been found. There are no dinosaurs found in the La Brea tar pits, because the pits did not begin to form until after the dinosaurs went extinct.

How did all these animals end up in the tar pits?  The tar pits would become covered with leaves, and mud, and grass would grow up through them until it looked just like land. Then a unlucky animal would walk up and think the tar pits were just watering holes, and step into them. They would get stuck, and attract a predator who would attack the animal and also get stuck until it died of dehydration, or starved.

The pits have been being excavated ever since the 1940’s, and are excavated every summer, when the heat makes it easier to remove the tar. They also only excavate it every summer due to funding, and the fact that a majority of the workers are students at the local college.

The Pits have been mentioned in a Bugs Bunny Cartoon “My Bunny Lies Over the Sea.”and was mentioned often in “The Flintstones”.

There is a Museum at the tar pits called the C. Page Museum.  You can learn more about the Tar Pits by visiting their website.

Hi, I just found your blog and like your allowance system. Can you provide any details on how you have them save? Do you hand out the weekly allowance a certain day? Do you have a savings bank, free spending bank, etc? I want to begin doing this and have tried many things and failed at keeping up with it especially when money is tight. I agree that this works better than them asking for things all the time. I have a 15, 11, 10, 6 and 3. So the amount will add up considerably, but I agree that they need to learn now how to spend and save and decide what is really important and things they dont really need but just want. Thanks for any extra tips on the subject.
