American Girl Club Week 1 – Kirsten 1854

January 8, 2010 at 8:51 am (Uncategorized)

For our first week of American Girl Club for Kirsten we made yarn dolls. In the Meet Kirsten book Kirsten has to leave her doll behind in storage when her family doesn’t have enough money to take all their belongings to Minnesota.  So I figured this was a good week for the girls to learn about what kind of dolls they would have made on the prairie.

To make the Yarn Dolls you will need…

A pieces of cardboard cut to 5"X7"
30 yards yarn for body
10 yards yarn for arms
1 yard (same as arms) for waist and tying arms.
Three 2 yard pieces of yarn for hair
2 beads for eyes
felt for mouth
white thread and needle to sew on hair and eyes.
glue to attach mouth

Step 1 – wrap all the body yarn around the cardboard in the 7" side.  Use a small piece of the same color as the body to tie off the top tightly and then remove from the cardboard.

Step 2 – Wrap the arm color around the same way.  Remove from cardboard and cut one end.  tie a small piece of string to secure the end that still has a loop.  braid the arms together then secure the cut end with a small piece of string.  cut the loop end so both ends are the same.

Step 3 – On the body use a small piece of the body color to tie around and make a neck.  (You now have a tassel.)

Step 4 – Cut the bottom of the tassel so it is now loose. Divide the tassle in half.  Insert the arms and then use a piece about 1 yard long of the arm color to make the waist.

Step 5 –  Take the 3 pieces you cut for the hair and braid into one loooooong piece.

Step 6 – Arrange hair on head and stitch with needle and thread.

Step 7 – Use needle and thread to sew on eyes.

Step 8 – Glue on mouth.  (You could use yarn to make the mouth.)

Of all the crafts we have done in American Girl Club this is the first one that I waaaayyyy underestimated how long it would take to make.  The biggest thing that took forever was braiding the three 2 yard pieces for the hair.

We braided…

and braided….

and braided….

and braided…..

and did I mention..braided…
But, we finally finished them!  They all came out adorable!

And speaking of adorable…

It was a great night!  We had a nice discussion about book 1 at the start of club and the girls took breaks form their braiding to snack on Swedish Rye Crackers and Lingonberry Jam.  (Al a IKEA!  LOL)

I can’t wait for the next time we meet..when there will be….more braiding!  LOL (We will be starting rag rugs.)

Happy Homeschooling,
